Does Everyone Need DLC to Play Together?
In Easy Red 2, does everyone need DLC to join a friend's campaign? Not necessarily: a Steam lobby workaround used in 2025 allowed players without an expansion to join a base-game mission and stay connected when the session switched to DLC. Joining a lobby already running a paid mission could instead redirect them to that expansion's purchase page, making the starting mission important for your group.
That distinction explains why one friend could play through Stalingrad without owning it while another couldn't enter a DLC lobby. Joining an active expansion mission and staying through a mission change behaved differently.
The Steam workaround was working in September and November 2025. Use that platform and timeframe when planning around it; it isn't a blanket promise of host-only DLC access across every console and game version.
You also don't need paid campaigns simply to play multiplayer. Easy Red 2 includes online co-op and PvP, so your group can start with base-game missions.
How to Set Up a Lobby With Mixed DLC Ownership
Try this sequence on Steam before buying the same expansion for every friend:

- Have the expansion owner host the session.
- Start with a base-game mission. Everyone without the DLC should join while that mission is selected.
- Wait until the group is connected.
- Switch to the DLC mission through mission rotation or a map vote. The 2025 behavior allowed nonowners already in the session to remain and continue playing.
For example, if you own Stalingrad and your friend owns only the base game, begin with a vanilla mission rather than asking them to join directly into Stalingrad.
If joining opens a DLC purchase page, check which mission the lobby is running. Start the session on a base-game mission and try the sequence above. The purchase redirect was the specific obstacle this method addressed.
Keep the initial test simple: use an ordinary base-game mission before adding custom content with its own dependencies.
Which Expansions Are Separate Purchases?
The paid campaign lineup includes five packs:

- Stalingrad: Battles around the Volga and the ruined city, with Soviet weapons, vehicles, uniforms, and missions.
- Normandy: D-Day landings and subsequent fighting with Allied and Axis forces.
- Ardennes 1940 & 1944: The invasion of France and the later Ardennes fighting in one expansion.
- Shanghai - Nanking: Campaigns covering the 1937 fighting in China.
- Blood on the Danube: Battles in Hungary during the closing months of World War II.
Blood on the Danube released on July 15, 2026, bringing the lineup beyond the four packs covered by older buying guides.
Choose the campaign your group actually wants to play, then test the lobby setup with that pack. Owning Stalingrad doesn't mean everyone needs Normandy or the other expansions for that session.
Use the Easy Red 2 Steam DLC page to compare the individual packs before purchasing.
Custom Missions Have Separate DLC Dependencies
Playing through a hosted campaign doesn't give your account ownership of its expansion assets. That matters when you move into custom missions, scripting, or the editor, which are PC features.

Version 2.1.1 includes specific ownership handling for DLC items:
| Feature | Version 2.1.1 behavior |
|---|---|
| Editor handling of unowned DLC items | Items are skipped, with a message in the F3 console. |
| Scripted vehicle cargo | Items from owned DLCs are accepted, and cargo contents synchronize online. |
Before organizing a custom-mission night, review its required expansions and have everyone prepare the needed content. When building a mission, watch the F3 console for the message displayed when items from unowned DLCs are skipped.
Buy expansions for the campaigns and assets you want to access yourself. For an occasional Steam co-op session with friends, test the base-game-to-DLC mission sequence first.
