Which Campaigns Can You Play?

Easy Red 2 takes you from battles in China to armored clashes in Mongolia and the closing operations in Hungary. This Easy Red 2 campaigns guide breaks down the historical settings, DLC campaigns, and squad tactics that help you handle their different battlefields. Knowing how to coordinate infantry, vehicles, and support gives you more ways to approach an objective.

The campaign selection includes Tunisia: Southern Operations and Tunisia: Northern Operations, alongside settings such as Anzio, Kwajalein, and Roi-Namur.

Several expansions group battles around a particular theater or period:

ExpansionCampaigns
Shanghai-Nanking DLCBattle of Shanghai; Battle of Nanking
Ardennes DLCInvasion of France; Battle of the Bulge
Stalingrad DLCBattle of Stalingrad
Blood on Danube DLCSiege of Budapest; Operation Konrad; Operation Spring Awakening

Choose an expansion around the battles you want to play. For example, select Shanghai-Nanking for the fighting in China, or Blood on Danube for Budapest and the operations in Hungary.

Across the game, the mission selection supports single-player, PvP, and co-op play. The overall offering spans more than 150 missions, with infantry, armored vehicles, artillery, and aircraft contributing to the fighting.

Khalkhin Gol: Nine Missions in the Cold Steel Update

Version 2.1.1, “Cold Steel,” introduces the Battles of Khalkhin Gol as a released campaign. Its nine missions follow the 1939 conflict across Mongolia’s grasslands, moving from border clashes into major armored engagements.

Easy Red 2 — Khalkhin Gol: Nine Missions in the Cold Steel Update

The campaign covers fighting involving Mongolian cavalry and Manchurian forces, the Japanese 23rd and 7th Divisions, and the Soviet 36th Motorized Division. Battles around Bain-Tsagan Hill lead into Soviet counteroffensives and the encirclement and retreat of Japanese forces.

Mongolia and Manchukuo join the represented factions with their own voices, uniforms, weapons, and equipment. The update also adds vehicles such as the BT-5, BA-20, Type 97 Te-ke, and Mitsubishi Ki-30 Light Bomber.

On these open battlefields, plan your route before leaving cover. Use terrain to limit exposure, and coordinate infantry movement with supporting fire instead of sending the whole squad across open ground together. When operating armor, keep checking the surrounding battlefield rather than focusing exclusively on the target in your sights.

Use Squad Roles to Support the Objective

Easy Red 2 lets you issue orders to AI soldiers and switch between squad roles. Use that flexibility to address the problem holding up an advance.

Easy Red 2 — Use Squad Roles to Support the Objective

Infantry roles include the squad leader, radioman, sapper, marksman, heavy machine gunner, medic, and rifleman. Available squad compositions and equipment change with the units involved.

Keep the Radioman Close

The radioman is central to squad leader support calls, including artillery and tank support. Keep that soldier near the leader when preparing a request.

When playing the radioman, handle the coordinate entry for support requests. Find cover before working through the radio interaction so you can complete it without standing exposed during a firefight.

Match the Role to the Task

Use the squad’s equipment deliberately:

  • Squad leader: Coordinate movement and support rather than concentrating only on personal kills.
  • Heavy machine gunner: Cover an approach while other soldiers move.
  • Medic: Watch for wounded teammates and use the appropriate medical tool.
  • Sapper: Handle objectives that require explosives with the equipment provided.
  • Marksman: Use visibility and a suitable firing position to engage enemies at range.

Practice these interactions in training before relying on them during a campaign mission. Include movement, equipment use, squad commands, and vehicle controls in that practice.

Move Between Cover and Prepare for Close Combat

Large maps give you room to maneuver, but crossing that space without support leaves your squad vulnerable. Check the map, identify the enemy’s position, and choose a route with usable cover.

When an enemy position stops your advance, use supporting fire to create an opening:

  1. Establish a firing position with cover and a view of the enemy.
  2. Keep fire on that position while another element moves.
  3. Move toward a flank rather than repeating the same exposed approach.
  4. Cover the soldiers who are still advancing once the moving element reaches its next position.

Buildings and forests can support ambushes, while elevated ground can improve visibility. Check your exposure before settling into a position. Destructible environments also mean that cover can change during the battle.

Watch for Bayonets at Short Range

Cold Steel adds an expanded in-hand and melee system with slashing, stabbing, and blocking animations for supported weapons.

Hold the melee button to draw or put away a bayonet as a knife. On keyboard, 3 cycles through melee weapons in your inventory.

AI soldiers can draw melee weapons when enemies get close, including switching to bayonets when their firearms are empty. Keep your weapon ready when approaching an enemy at short range; an empty enemy rifle does not make the encounter safe.

Use Japanese Grenadiers for Indirect Support

Version 2.1.1 adds the Type 89 Grenade Discharger, a portable support weapon with an adjustable range scale.

Japanese grenadier squads contain three grenadiers, each carrying eight Type 91 grenades for ammunition. AI grenadiers can respond to squad leader artillery orders or engage autonomously when their squad has spotted enemies outside their direct line of fire.

Use the range adjustment when operating the weapon, and keep the squad’s spotted targets in mind when directing support.

How Dynamic Operations Differs From Historical Campaigns

Cold Steel also introduces a prototype of Dynamic Operations. This mode uses seed-based battlefield generation, allowing different battle setups while letting you reproduce a particular setup with the same seed.

Its central loop revolves around capturing zones. Those zones provide victory points and reinforcement tickets, which you can spend to bring in better-equipped units.

Prioritize capturing zones to build your reinforcement options. Use those resources to strengthen your force as control of the map shifts.

Keep a seed when you want to revisit a specific battle setup. Replaying it gives you a practical way to try a different route or unit choice against the same generated battlefield.

Dynamic Operations sits alongside the historical campaigns as a different way to play. Its prototype is built through the game’s mission scripting tools.

Iwo Jima: Planned for December 2026

Iwo Jima is scheduled for December 2026. Its planned fighting shifts from Khalkhin Gol’s open grasslands toward close infantry engagements among volcanic rocks and black sand.

The battlefield includes locations such as Hills 362A, B and C, Charlie Dog Ridge, The Bloody Gorge, Cushmans’ Pocket, and Hill 165. Mount Suribachi is planned to feature a tunnel system connecting sea level to the summit, with tunnels extending across much of the island.

While waiting for that campaign, practice short advances between cover, squad coordination, and close-range weapon handling in the existing missions. Those mechanics are already available to learn before tackling the island’s planned infantry battles.
